PROLOGUE (1:1-4)

 

 

I.   THE MESSAGE WE PROCLAIM (1:5-10)

 

God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all

Five “IF” conditions on fellowship. (1:5-10)

If we say we have fellowship and walk in darkness, we lie (6)

If we walk in the light we have fellowship and are cleansed by Jesus’ blood (7)

If we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves (8)

If we confess our sins He forgives (9)

If we say we have not sinned we make him a liar and his word is not in us (10)

 

 2: Antichrist

II.  PURPOSE OF WRITING

1. “That you might not sin” (2:1-6)

 

     2. An old and a new commandment to be obeyed (2:7-11)

 

     3. To Children, young men and fathers—Love not the world (2:12-17)

 

      4. Concerning those who would lead you astray (2:18-29)

IV.  TEST THE SPIRITS WHETHER THEY ARE OF GOD (4:1-12)

 

1.  We know by what they teach—That Jesus is come in the flesh (4:2-5)

 

2.  We know the Spirit of God by whether they hear the apostles. (4:6)

 

3.  We know that we abide in God by God’s love in us (4:7-21)

V.  HOW WE KNOW THOSE BEGOTTEN OF GOD (5:1-12)

1. By love manifested in keeping his commandments (5:1-3)

2. By faith that overcomes the world (5:4-5)

3. By the threefold witness of God—the water, the Spirit, and the blood (5:6-12)

 

 

CONCLUSION:

a.     That you may know that you have eternal life (5:13)

b.     That you may have boldness in your petitions (5:14-15)

c.     That you may pray for those who become entangled in sin (5:16-17)

a.     We know that whosoever is of God does not sin (5:18)

b.     We know that we are of God and the whole world lies in the evil one (5:19)

c.     We know that the Son of God has come and given us understanding (5:20)
